DOs and DON’Ts of Logo Design – Promotional Products Edition

Let’s set the scene – you’ve just had a brilliant idea pop into your head and now your mind is racing with all the opportunities and possibilities. You’re ready to start a business.

Starting a business involves making many (many) choices, and one of the first important choices is that of a logo. It sets up your whole business and is the first step of creating a lasting brand.

As you can imagine promotional products are an essential part of growing a business. On average a promotional product is kept for around 5 months and gets 1000 impressions per month. Keeping that in mind we compiled a guide on the dos and don’ts of logo design. A list of things to keep in mind so that you can utilise one of the most powerful marketing tools – branding your logo on promotional products.

Depending on the product size, shape and material, it can have a particular decoration size. This is why it’s a good idea to have a rough idea of what promo products best suits your company and brand. If you know this, it may help you decide if you want a logo that’s landscape or portrait shaped.

This is why it’s also advisable to have multiple variations of logo – so you can brand on any given decoration area.

Colours are such an important factor in branding and in promotional products as well. Somethings to remember is that a gradient logo design can be printed using digital print option (full colour option).

Depending on the product, there may be option for a 1 colour print, 2 colour print and a full colour print so try to colour your logo to fit to these options.

There’s also the option of embroidery where available and it includes the usage of 5-7 different thread colours.

Spacing between design elements or font is a factor to consider. To ensure the best decoration result, have enough of a gap so that elements don’t merge together. If the decoration area is on the smaller side, it’s best to not have a very intricate design.

Font can also be a distinguishing factor for branding, but be sure to choose a font that’s not too thin or one that’s too thick and close together. It may work on some products, but you’ll have more product options to choose from with a better font style.
